“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Right away we have three questions to resolve, and they are fundamental. They are all the more worth our attention because false answers to these questions have spawned many heresies, including Framework Hypotheses:
Is this first verse a title, summary, or some kind of isolated statement? Or is it simply the beginning of the story?
What is meant by “the beginning”?
Does this teach, as traditionally taught, that God created the heavens and the earth from nothing (ex nihilo), that is, without using any preexisting matter, energy, space-time, or other starting stuff (for want of a better word)?
